Thanks for taking a look at this advice page. Too often we see a great product, but forget to ask questions or seek advice before we buy. If you need any questions answering please take a look at our FAQ's page, and if you still don't see what you need, just get in contact with us.
We take the health of our family seriously, and by extension we will always try to give the best advice and care we can, regarding your food flask. There are times you need to have a little extra reassurance and we will try to help. Where you need further advice, your local food standards agency may be the most appropriate source for information.
When we researched food flask products, we noted that there were many conflicting accounts regarding keep warm times, and how long an insulated food flask can stay hot or cold. The advice and selling points can often be confusing, and similar manufacturers products can have very different times.
In determining the information we have given to you, we have tried to be as honest as possible, and quoted keep hot times that we have tested ourselves to be sure. Variances in times can occur through:
In our tests the food remained above 63 deg celsius for 7 Hours after filling.
Hot Holding food can be a fantastic way to take hot food to work, for a picnic, camping, and for your toddler who needs to eat mid morning when you are out for the morning walk. However, you must remember that there can be bad consequences for your health if you consume food that had been kept "lukewarm" in storage for too long before consumption.
Current advice with hot holding food suggests the food must not be eaten below 63 deg celsius. Lower temperatures can promote bacterial growth and be a danger for consumption. We make no exaggerated claims for how long our flasks remain hot. We have checked our flasks ourselves, and have found that it remains above 63 deg celsius for over 7 hours, when our advice is followed. We therefore advise all our customers not to store food for more than 6 hrs in our flasks, and strongly recommend that you ensure that the food is sufficently hot and above 63 deg celsius before you consume it.
"Q. What temperature should I hot hold cooked food at?"
"Keep hot food above 63°C. This is outside the danger zone (5°C - 63°C). Bacteria grow best in warm temperatures, approximately 25°C – 40°C. Lukewarm food is dangerous as it is a perfect environment for bacteria to thrive. If cooked food is not stored above 63°C, it should be used up within two hours of cooking. Ensure the first batch of cooked food being hot held is served first. Where possible do not mix batches. It is recommended that the first batch is used before adding a different batch." (Exerpt from www.fsai.ie Food Safety Authority Ireland, July 2018))
1. Prime the flask by filling it with water direct from the kettle (more than 95 deg celsius), and leave for 2-3min with the lid on.
2. Press the orange pressure release button, and carefully unscrew the top, pouring the contents away. (RISK OF SCALDING from water -CAUTION)
3. Now fill your food flask with your hot food. Make sure that it is "piping hot" (95 deg celsius), and seal straight away; Don't overfill the container.
4. Check that it is sealed, and now you can attach screw on bowl / cup. Place carefully in an appropriate bag until you are ready to eat.
5. As these contents are very hot, KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN, and should only be used with adult supervision.
4. If your food is at a lower temperature than stated 95 deg celsius above, then the maximum time for hot holding will be reduced. You must ensure that your food is above the stated 63 deg celsius prior to comsumption. For further local advice check with your local food safety authority (e.g. fsai.ie)
