Seasonal Produce

There are so many different seasonal fruit and veg that it can be real interesting to see what is in season at the local supermarket, farmshop or local grower. For our family the choice is never the same twice. We try wherever possible to eat the fruit and veg of the season, grown locally. Not everyone is lucky enough to be able to do this, but if you can, then it can lead to really interesting combinations -that maybe you never even tried before.

Bento: Breakfast, warm or cold Lunch?

1. Try to plan for a balanced meal.  There are normally 4 or more compartments to a bento box, so this gives you a great way to balance your meal.

2. Think about the carbohydrates, the proteins, fruit and veg.  Our family tends to mix the carbohydrate with the protein using a large sandwich, but it ok to keep this separate if you wish. The veg, fruit and/or salad go into separate compartments.

3. How will it look when you open it?  Colour plays such an important part when thinking of food. There is such a wide range of fruits and veg that can be eaten raw (or cooked), that colour groupings can be fun to make. However, with our children it can always be a challenge, so we like to introduce daring colours now and then to see what happens.

Tips for packing your Bento Lunchbox

Use the separator within each section to try to keep foods separate when packed into the same container.

1. Try to keep the wetter foods together e.g pack melon away from the sandwich…. When filling with liquids or yoghurt, make sure this is in a separate compartment. (If in 2 tier box, use 1 whole try for tray for this, or if in 5 compartment one or more sections as desired. Make sure to seal with the leakproof lid.

2. Try to balance the colours, look and texture when choosing your seasonal veg or fruit for you meal.

3. Planning ahead with your meals can be a great way to save money, and also ensures that you balance your healthy meals throughout the week, as well as thoughout the changing seasons of the year. In our family the preparation needs very little extra time, and can give the kids (or you) something to really look forward to at meal times.
